When we first brought our little guy home, he only seemed to sleep in our arms. We know now that this is totally normal newborn behaviour but when you are exhausted, hormonal and trying to figure out how the heck to be a parent, it can seem like you’re never going to get any sleep every again! Eventually we figured out how to get our little man down for a good nights sleep however he never seemed to want to nap. Mum had told me stories of how I would fall asleep while playing on my mat and talking other new mums, their little ones seemed to be forever taking naps! So why didn’t our guy want to have a kip during the day?

As it turns out we weren’t putting him to sleep. In our naive new-parent style we hadn’t realised that the little guy might just need some help having a nap. We had a great bedtime routine for night time but we were just waiting for him to drift off in our arms (or on his mat) during the day. Once we realised this we came up with a formula:

  • Swaddle
  • White noise
  • Bassinet/Cot

We started swaddling him for every nap, turning on his while noise machine and making sure his naps were in his bassinet/cot. We felt so silly once we realised that he just needed to know it was nap time. Not the first nor the last time that we felt like idiots in charge of a baby!
